Scott Reisenleiter: Eastlakes man convicted for drink driving

After sinking schooners at a local watering hole, the intoxicated man went to get his jacket from his ute. A last-second decision saw the man hop behind the wheel four times over the limit and nearly smash into a cop car.

A drunk driver who nearly smashed into a police car after running the gauntlet to his Eastlakes home following a Friday night booze session was four times over the legal blood alcohol limit, a court has heard.

Father-of-one Scott James Reisenleiter, who pleaded guilty to high-range drink-driving, told police he had enjoyed up to five schooners at Mascot’s Newmarket Hotel on August 28 before he made a “terrible decision” about midnight.

The 46-year-old man’s lawyer told the court her client planned on leaving the car at the venue but made a last-second decision to hop behind the wheel and drive the short distance home.

“When he went out (to his car) to pick up his jacket, he made that terrible decision,” she said.

Police patrolling Mascot were forced “to take evasive action” when a Ford Ranger ute, with Reisenleiter behind the wheel, turned straight into their path at the intersection of Coward St and Dougherty St.

Police facts state after the drunk driver was pulled over he opened his door and an “immediate smell of liquor filled the air”.

The 46-year-old man was heavily slurring, struggling to maintain his balance and had bloodshot eyes, court documents reveal.

When taken to the police station, a blood alcohol reading of 0.212 was recorded.

The court heard Reisenleiter held a senior position at InfraBuild Recycling, a supplier of recycled steel.

Magistrate Jane Mottley said the Eastlakes man had put people at risk.

“Whether you are driving for two kilometres or 200 kilometres, the risk to the community is still there, particularly with a blood alcohol reading of 0.212,” she said.

Reisenleiter was convicted, fined $1100 and disqualified from driving for six months.
