Saturday Night Fever lights up Sydney with 2.5 million LED lights
Saturday Night Feverproducer John Frost is promising the disco musical will be the party event of the year.
Saturday Night Fever producer John Frost is promising the latest stage adaption of paying homage to the 1977 cult movie will be the party event of the year.
“Among the massive song and dance numbers there are 2.5 million LED lights that make up the revolving set and that spectacular dance floor that everyone knows and associates with this production,” Frost told those lucky enough to get a first look at rehearsals for musical that premieres at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre on March 27.
Australia’s original disco Queen will play The Diva who performs at Disco Odyssey 2001, the nightclub where Tony Manero (Euan Doige) dances every Saturday night, while Paulini, Bobby Fox, Natalie Conway and Nana Matapule form the star vocalists who give voice to the Bee Gee’s famous disco tunes off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
Paulini said this was a story everyone knows presented in a different way.
“The storyline is there but there are different arrangements to give it a new fresh, modern look,” she said.
She is sure Sydney will catch the fever when the disco-inspired musical lights up Sydney come March 27.
“Who doesn’t love the Bee Gee songs, they are some of the greatest songs ever,” she said.
“That disco era was so amazing. It was so electrifyingly.
“There was so much happening and people were so accepting which I think it a great mix, it really did open eyes and minds up to a myriad of different things.”
Tim “Timomatic” Omaji (Fame, The Heights) hangs up his dancing shoes to take on the role of Monty, the MC at the nightclub.
“I play Monty who is the Disco Odyssey DJ he is the master of ceremonies, he lets you know what is happening, and he introduces the lovely Diva, who is played by Marcia Hines, into the club,” Omaji said.
“This is more of an acting role for me and I may or may not be wearing a massive Afro.
“I have been studying a lot of Soul Train (an American music-dance TV program), to get the character right”.
Like the classic movie, Saturday Night Fever the musical is packed with disco classics, including the Bee Gees’ greatest hits Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever, Tragedy and More Than A Woman.
The 1977 movie starring John Travolta and Karen Gorney, is credited with defining the 1970’s, while the soundtrack remains one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time with over 45 million copies sold.
The original stage adaptation of Saturday Night Fever began in the West End in 1998.
This brand-new production premiered recently in Paris incorporating more songs and dancing with stunning new choreography, a celebration of one of the most loved films and soundtracks of all time.
