Foster St, Surry Hills Fire

Firefighters are still attempting to keep a blaze that broke out in Surry Hills this morning under control as locals in nearby buildings were forced to grab their pets and evacuate.

Ten crews had responded to the incident at a restaurant on Foster St about 10.30am, fighting a fire between the ground and first floors of the building.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the blaze had broken out in the kitchen.

When that was under control, firefighters had checked to see if the blaze had spread before attacking a fire between two floors.

Several streets are closed off in the area with two firefighters hoisted in cranes among the slew of emergency services currently on the scene.

There is restricted access to Campbell St, while Forster St, Beauchamp Ln and Commonwealth St are also closed off.
