Renowned artist Kate Banazi will unveil her most ambitious exhibition, Soft Landing, in Curatorial+Co gallery Redfern

Having collaborated with fashion designer Dion Lee and tennis player Serena Williams, Kate Banazi will be opening her most ambitious exhibition to date this month. Discover the inspiration behind it.

CIAF performers will be modelling clothes from fabric screen printed at TAFE by artist Arone Meeks and Lynelle Flinders, who teach at TAFE.

She’s collaborated with tennis player Serena Williams and fashion designer Dion Lee, and now renowned screen print and sculpture artist Kate Banazi is preparing to unveil her most ambitious exhibition to date.

The exhibition, Soft Landing, will officially open on July 13 at Curatorial+Co gallery in Redfern and was inspired by the artist’s lived experiences of the past two years with Covid-19.

Ms Banazi found herself feeling “bewildered” and “quite disconnected” during that time, but this show is her version of finding balance again.

“It’s just the idea of a gentle come down and being kind to yourself,” Ms Banazi said.

Through her work in the exhibition, she said that there was a certain beauty to “imperfect” art that she hopes she can explore more.

“The main thing I want to convey is [imperfections are] where I believe character lies and how beautiful those flaws can be rather than alienating the ideal of unobtainable perfection,” Ms Banazi said.

According to the artist, many people are fascinated by artworks that look polished and refined. But this is a stigmatisation she hopes to stray away from.

“People gravitate to something that’s really, really perfect,” Ms Banazi said. “But who’s it perfect for?”

“That contrasting view of beauty has interested me for some time, and the question of who gets to decide what is beautiful is a really fascinating concept.”

Sophie Vander, Curatorial+Co Gallery director, said Ms Banazi was a very unique artist.

“She’s one of those true creatives that it doesn’t matter what you throw at her,” Ms Vander said. “She comes up with something fabulous, some fabulous idea.”

In the exhibition, Ms Banazi has a variety of “materiality and imagery” to look at and interact with, according to Ms Vander. There will be paperworks, works on canvas, as well as sculptures and an installation of a punching bag.

With the show’s imminent opening, Ms Banazi is looking forward to seeing the audience’s reactions to her work. Whether it is confusion or constructive criticism, she is excited to hear their thoughts and hopes her passion for her art is visible.

“It’s something I’ve really enjoyed making so I kind of hope that shines through,” Ms Banazi said.
