A backpackers hostel with more than 1000 beds could soon be built on Sydney’s Broadway in a move developers say is keeping up with soaring demand for visitor and tourist numbers to the city.
The former Telstra exchange building at 184-200 Broadway in Chippendale would be transformed into a five-storey tourist accommodation hub with 1058 hostel beds as part of a $13m plan being considered by the City of Sydney.
The development would include communal areas including a roof terrace with a swimming pool and sunbathing decks.
There would also be an on-site bar, a cafe and 100 parking bays for bicycles.
The venue would offer a range of activities for guests including walking tours, food and drink sessions, music, movies and other events.
The 51-year-old building previously operated as a telecommunications hub operated by Telstra before the site was sold last year to Tricon Group for a reported sum of $67m.
The development would involve adapting the current building into the new hostel with the bulk of construction costs to be spent on transforming internal sections of the building to suit accommodation purposes.
The plans, which have been lodged by Tricon Group, stated the design was inspired by large scale hostels in Europe such as the Next House hostel in Copenhagen.
The proposal is partly aimed at meeting rising demand for tourist accommodation in Sydney with latest data Destination NSW data showing 100.5 million tourists visited the state in the 12 months to September last year – up 4.8 per cent from the previous year.
“The proposal will provide additional accommodation diversity to service demand in the City of Sydney in proximity to public transport and local jobs and services,” the plans stated.
Plans to the council show the hostel will offer 164 rooms with a mix of four, six and eight-bedroom rooms.
Plans stated that most guests at the hostel are expected to stay an average of two to three nights. The maximum length of stay would be 28 days in accordance with the City of Sydney requirements.
The building is not heritage listed but is within the Chippendale Heritage Conservation Area.
The plans were lodged to the council this month and are being considered.
