GLEBE could soon be home to a Japanese-style pod hotel where rooms are no bigger than a cupboard.

Plans have been submitted to the City of Sydney council by Ryals Hotel on Broadway.

Hotel bosses plan on installing 100 of the so-called pods into just four basement rooms.

Pod or capsule hotels were first launched in Japan in the late 1970s and are now commonplace throughout big cities in the country.

In recent years pod hotels have started opening in other countries.

There are two others in Sydney: The Capsule Hotel and Space Q, both in George Street, which opened last year.

If approved Ryals would be Sydney’s largest pod hotel.

The pods are typically stacked and measure little more than 2m by 1.5m.

The Ryals pods will contain a bed, television, safe and climate control.

They will be spread across four rooms in the hotel’s basement with shared single sex bathrooms.

The proposal states their affordability and safety for single travellers is a huge attraction.

“They are currently a niche accommodation option in Sydney,” the development application adds. “The location of the site and its proximity to public transport, shops, services and the University of Sydney is ideal for such accommodation.”

As well as the four pod rooms, two communal areas are planned. There will be a “breakout area” which will contain a kitchen with seating and a waiting/lounge area.

There are also plans for a bar within the hotel’s reception area.

The applicant states the pods are designed for just one person and any guests will be prohibited from sharing a pod.

If approved the applicant hopes to open the pod hotel in August/September next year.

Ryals already has a standard hotel on the site with the basement level currently used for storage.
