A learner licence holder who roared to breakneck speeds on his Yamaha motorcycle has told his wildly dangerous actions were because he was running late for work.

Phillip Sandy Isogon, 25, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and not displaying his learner plates after police chased him down on Airport Rd, Mascot about 6.15pm on June 24.

Downing Centre Local Court heard the Campsie man had been running very late for his work shift at Sydney Airport then he “harshly accelerated” after stopping at a red light.

The police facts state Isogon surged between two cars when the traffic lights at the Link Rd intersection turned green. When police officers gave chase to the 25-year-old, they estimated his speed reached between 160-180km/h.

“The speed at which the accused travelled placed not only himself, but other road users, in grave danger,” court documents stated.

Isogon’s lawyer, Vanya Hampel, told the court the Campsie man accepted he did the wrong thing.

“He accepts that he made a very, very foolish decision to drive at that speed,” she said.

Magistrate Erin Kennedy reminded Isogon that motor vehicles were weapons and convicted him of both offences, sentencing him to a one year community correction and $2200 fine.

His licence was also disqualified for 12 months.
