A former member of Australia’s Got Talent dance group Justice Crew was back in court on Thursday on charges of being part of a syndicate that swindled almost $6 million via an email scam.
Omar “Scrap” Kamara, 30, appeared in Sydney Central Local Court via audio video link (AVL) from John Moroney Correctional Complex in his prison greens.
Kamara faces nine counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime and one count of participating in a criminal group while contributing to criminal activity.
Magistrate Margaret Quinn was asked by the prosecution for a four week adjournment of proceedings for charge certification.
“Is this the one with 14 co-accused? Magistrate Quinn asked.
The prosecution confirmed it was.
Kamara’s lawyer did not attend court so Magistrate Quinn addressed him directly.
“Your solicitor is not here,” Magistrate Quinn said.
“This matter is going over to the 17th of September.
“You’ll be on AVL on that day. He’ll probably speak to you about it.”
Last month police laid a further 11 counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime against the group’s alleged ringleader Ifeanyi Samuel Nzeribe, 29, of Zetland.
Nzeribe, who now faces a total of 32 charges, also had his case briefly mentioned in court yesterday.
The charges stem from the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad September 2019 sting labelled Strike Force Belltree.
Police allege the group altered invoices which had been sent to legitimate businesses for payment through an email scam, before the funds were transferred into personal accounts.
