The $6 billion Barangaroo South development will finally be complete under a planning proposal for a sweeping new public domain.
Designed by internationally renowned landscape architects Grant Associates, the two-hectare space includes a new cove at Sydney Harbour, a park, an expanded waterfront walkway and a public pier.
Along with an extension to Wulugul Walk around the Crown Sydney Hotel Resort, including a 30m wide waterfront promenade, the proposal also features Waterman’s Cove — a fully-accessible amphitheatre-style boardwalk on the water and a public pier on the southern side.
The garden and park design also include a green link from the CBD to Barangaroo’s retail and dining precinct through Hickson Park, a one-hectare space which forms part of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority’s commitment to dedicate more than half of the development as open public space.
The park will be made up of predominantly native trees, but with a mix of exotics and will include park furniture, meeting and eating spaces, free Wi-Fi and bike parking.
Waterman’s Quay tops off the plans, with a wide tree-lined boulevard that mandates a slow-speed street which can be shared by cars, pedestrians and cyclists.
Craig van der Laan, CEO of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority said the sweeping proposal would be a boon to the people of Sydney.
“The new harbour cove and public park represent the next step in the extraordinary transformation of Barangaroo from a 22-hectare concrete container terminal into a world class, vibrant waterfront precinct,” Mr van der Laan said.
A development application will be lodged with the Department of Planning and Environment and be on public exhibition as part of the planning process.
