AFTER 18-years of business, the iconic World bar in Kings Cross made the shock announcement they would be closing their doors.

Owner Steve Ward made the announcement in a post to Instagram and Facebook last night, telling Sydneysiders it was “heartbreaking stuff.”

“We are sad to tell you that we will be closing the doors of The World Bar Sydney this Thursday 29 November,” Owner Steve Ward said in a post to Instagram and Facebook.

“Over the last 18 years, we have thrown some of Sydney’s most renowned club nights and live music events.

“We hope we’ve been able to put smiles on people’s faces and create a few hazy memories.

“On behalf of everyone at The World Bar, a massive thank you you our 2500 staff, 4500 DJs, 1000 bands and thousands upon thousands of punters who have walked through our doors over the last two decades,” he said.

Mr Ward recognised the pressure the lockout laws had on his own business and in his parting words he encouraged anyone who loves Sydney’s night-life to continue going out.

“The obvious connection that people will make on our closure is the effect of the lockout laws,” he said.

: It’s undeniable that they have had a huge impact on us, as well as Sydney’s live music scene.

“The best way to rebel is to go out.

“There are great venues and incredible music alive in the Cross and surrounding areas, so please get out there and support all our incredible friends, promoters, venue owners, artists still battling away for their love of live music.”

He called on the community to help make positive changes to legislation.

“Safety and entertainment are achievable, we have seen this put into practice in global cities around the world,” he said.

Mr Ward said he was very proud of the role it played in fostering young music talent and creating a safe space.

Following their announcement, hundreds of Sydneysiders took to social media to comment on the news, some describing it as tragic and heartbreaking.

“This just hit that little spot in my heart. Thanks for all the memories, sweat and lifelong friends I made because of you,” one said.

While another said: “My heart is breaking, World bar literally was the foundation of our youngers years.”

“My heart is heavy. Love you team, thank you for the music and amazing memories,” said another.

Their final show will be held tonight from 8pm.
