Australia's cocaine crisis

A city drug runner has been sentenced after being busted red-handed with a whopping amount of cocaine and MDMA inside his Kia at a known drug hotspot.

Lidcombe man Jun Hyung Kim, 24, was stopped by police on Sydney’s Pitt St after he was suspected of executing a drug deal with a male stranger about 7.30pm on February 26.

When the stranger was approached by police after leaving the car he revealed inside the car he had bought 1.3 grams of cocaine for $500.

Police officers found a “shaking” Jun Hyung Kim before uncovering, inside two brown paper bags, 67 bags of cocaine and 69 capsules of MDMA weighing about 43.8 grams and 10.3 grams respectively. More than $20,000 of cash was found in the front console.

In Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, Kim’s lawyer told the court that he had a drug problem and “had no one to turn to when he got in trouble with drugs.”

Magistrate Greg Elks said Kim had “not been in trouble before” and that he had shown remorse for his actions.

Kim was convicted of drug supply and dealing with the property proceeds of crime and was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.
