A whopping $56.3 million plan for the redevelopment of an iconic Sydney school has been revealed, as the NSW Government call for submissions over its expansion.
School Infrastructure NSW submitted the multimillion-dollar vision for revitalisation of Fort Street Public School, Millers Point, as part of a state significant development application to NSW Planning in May last year — including a bid to include the Bureau of Meteorology in the plans.
The redevelopment of the unique School, which neighbours the Sydney Harbour Bridge, includes a proposal to expand on the Fort Street Public School building with the addition of three storeys including new classrooms, the refurbishment and fit out of the Bureau of Meteorology building for uses as a school building, and the construction of a series of new one- to three-storey buildings featuring a new Environmental Education Centre, classrooms and canteen.
“The expansion of the school is critical to ensuring the long-term primary school capacity within the catchment, and will result in significantly improved teaching and learning facilities and open space,” a planner for the proposal said.
“Further, the project will facilitate the refurbishment of several important heritage items, including the Fort Street Public School building itself, the Bureau of Meteorology Building, and the Messenger’s Cottage.”
The NSW Government is calling for submissions to the plans, which will be on exhibition until April 29.
