Sydney Rides Festival’s first Pussy Cat Pedal spotlights famous cats

A STORYTELLING bike tour will reveal Sydney’s most famous felines as part of this year’s Sydney Rides Festival.
Experienced guides will lead riders on the Pussy Cat Pedal, a quirky exploration of the city’s bike network of cycleways, shared paths and quiet streets.
Riders will hear how cats arrived in Australia, took up residence on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and even contributed to an outbreak of the plague in Millers Point.
At the State Library of NSW they’ll visit a statue of Matthew Flinders’ famous cat, Trim, who sailed the oceans and accompanied Flinders in prison in the Mauritius.
The ride will pass through Cat Alley, a picturesque laneway and notorious kitty haunt in Surry Hills.
The Pussy Cat Pedal, on October 13 and 14, is one of 33 different bike-based events during this year’s Sydney Rides Festival, a month-long celebration of cycling in the city.
The Sydney Rides Festival launches on Saturday with The Big Adventure when St Peter’s Sydney Park will be transformed into an action-packed pop-up playground from 9am-4pm.
The free activities include parkour and yoga classes. Sports clinics will encourage young Sydneysiders to try out soccer, AFL, tennis, cyclocross and even breakdancing. While BMX stunt shows, bike ballet and roving entertainers will delight the crowds.
