A man accused of stabbing a stranger in the back near a Sydney light rail stop, then fleeing the state, will remain behind bars after being extradited from Victoria.
Hakan Kumru, 40, faced Downing Centre Local Court on Friday after allegedly stabbing 22-year-old Haojun Hu near Sydney’s Chinatown last Sunday afternoon.
NSW Police said officers had been told Mr Hu had been walking along Hay St, in Haymarket, when he was stabbed in the back by another man, who ran away towards Darling Dr.
Mr Hu was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, who took him to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-threatening injuries.
Investigators subsequently released an image of a suspect as part of a public appeal for information.
Following further inquiries, Kumru was arrested in Broadmeadows by Victoria Police on Tuesday.
He was then extradited to NSW on Thursday, when he was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless wounding.
Kumru, of no fixed abode, did not apply for bail in court on Friday.
He was accordingly remanded in custody to return to court on November 28.
