Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the government would spend $1.5 billion to purchase more than 170 buses under this year’s NSW budget, which is set to be handed down next Tuesday.

The number includes the replacement of 134 of the current ageing fleet and an additional 42 new buses.

The fleet will also include six double-decker buses as part of a commitment to “phase out bendy-buses that cause increased congestion on our streets,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Double decker buses are already in service on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and northwestern suburbs out to Blacktown.

The buses will deliver 3,300 more services a week, with plans for improvements to key corridors around Sydney to provide better bus access and improved reliability of bus services.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the commitment would deliver more services as well as creating new routes, providing extended operating hours and delivering bus priority infrastructure where it is needed the most.

“This is not just about adding more services, but also allowing for future growth,” Mr Constance said.
