FROM underwater concerts to karaoke carousels, Sydney Festival is ready to deliver a whole new world of experiences in 2018.
More than 130 events spanning theatre, dance, circus, visual art and music will take place across 51 venues, reaching from Sydney’s CBD to Parramatta, between January 6 to 28.
“Sydney Festival is Australia’s cultural New Year’s resolution, starting the year with experiences that stimulate discussion and reward the curious, adventurous citizen,” festival director Wesley Enoch says.
“It’s like having a family holiday in your own city.”
Enoch has been scouring the globe to bring the best international artists to Sydney, including the world’s first underwater band Between Music.
The Danish musicians will be singing and playing custom-made instruments while submerged in aquariums for their concert Aquasonic at Carriageworks.
Other impressive acts will include Tree of Code s — internationally renowned choreographer Wayne McGregor’s mashup of dance, visual art and electronic music at Darling Harbour Theatre; and from London, the National Theatre’s play Barber Shop Chronicles at the Seymour Centre, which explores the role of the barber shop in the lives of African men.
Art displays with striking aesthetics and underlying meanings feature strongly, such as Japanese artist Hiroshi Fuji’s vibrant Jurassic Plastic dinosaur sculptures at Sydney Town Hall, which are made from discarded toys.
There are plenty of opportunities for people to create their own fun at places such as the Meriton Festival Village in Hyde Park, where you can dance in a glitter-filled box, belt out some karaoke on a merry-go-round, cool off with a dip in the shipping container swimming pools and take a ride on a virtual reality ghost train.
Children can also make digital art with children in Japan via live video link at the Join The Dots project on at Sydney’s Opera House, Art Museum and Library.
