One of Australia’s iconic wine labels is set to bring its mouth-watering delights to the heart of Sydney, with a boutique cellar door planned for one of the city’s most popular tourist strips.
Chateau Tanundra, based in South Australia’s renown Barossa Valley, has lodged plans with the City of Sydney to fit out a small laneway venue at The Rocks.
John Geber, the owner of the award-winning label, said the cellar door was an adventurous ploy to bring the beauty of the Barossa to Sydney and promised a genuine up-market experience for all visitors.
“Not everyone goes to South Australia,” Mr Geber said. “In fact, it is one of the least-visited places in Australia so we though we will go to where the people are.
“I suspect the uncertainty and snap border closures due to COVID-19 to be happening for a couple of years, so we are going to give it a go at The Rocks.”
Mr Geber said the venue would look to tap into the city’s tourist market, with an increasing number of cruise ships set to dock at Circular Quay, as well as the top end of town.
“What type of experience will the venue deliver – absolutely up-market,” he said. “We have the oldest vines in the world, 150-year-old vines, 100-year-old vines … no one else in the world has that.
“We are really targeting that top end.”
The cellar door is expected to open in July, with the proposed plans currently before council.
