Woy Woy: Talen Brett Willoughby Green pleads guilty over fatal pedestrian crash

A P-plate driver pulled over after hitting an elderly woman crossing the road but totally “freaked out” when he saw another car drag the woman’s body 90m the other way, a court has heard.

A young motorist drove almost 500m down the road without his headlights on at night before slamming into a woman, 68, crossing the road, who was “flipped” into the air before being struck by another car coming the opposite direction.

Talen Brett Willoughby Green, of Booker Bay, faced Gosford Local Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to negligent driving occasioning death and failing to stop and assist after a crash.

An agreed set of facts states Green was captured on CCTV at a service station on Ocean Beach Rd at Woy Woy filling up a red Volkswagen beetle at 7.43pm on July 8 last year.

The then 20-year-old P2 driver went in to pay for the fuel as a public bus passed by the service station.

On the bus was a 68-year-old woman with two trolley-like shopping bags on wheels who was heading home.

The facts state Green got back into the red VW but failed to turn the headlights on as he drove out onto Ocean Beach Rd for a distance of 474m.

Meanwhile the woman got off the bus on the eastern side of the road and was about halfway across the southbound lane when Green saw her too late and tried to swerve, clipping her with the front driver’s side corner of the bumper bar.

“The deceased flipped in the air and came to rest in the northbound lane,” the facts state.

“The offender pulled over to the side of the road and stopped his vehicle.”

But a white Kia Cerato coming the other way could not avoid the woman’s body, which it hit and dragged for about 90m.

Green would later tell police he “freaked out” at what he had just witnessed and jumped back into his car and took off to his Booker Bay home.

Witnesses stopped and another motorist flagged down a passing ambulance.

Police arrived and used a car jack to lift the Cerato off the woman who had gone into cardiac arrest.

Paramedics worked on her for about 20 minutes but she was declared dead at the scene with “massive head injuries” and multiple broken bones.

Crash scene investigators arrived but didn’t find any skid marks.

They came to the conclusion the woman had been subject to a “fender vault” in which she was struck by the corner of the car and sent on “a trajectory that saw her land on the other side of the road”.

The debris stretched 160m along Ocean Beach Rd including a bag of walnuts in her shopping that exploded on impact while her purple beret and a sneaker were found some distance apart.

Green eventually met with officers the following morning after going home.

He told police he went on a long walk because he was “freaked out and was traumatised by what he saw” and also sent a text to his mother that read: “I f--ked up. I’m sorry mum”.

Green later told police he knew he had done “the complete wrong thing” but felt “pretty certain” he had his headlights on.

Green was adjourned for six weeks to undergo a sentencing assessment report.
