Woman drives car into front doors of Coles Umina Beach
An eyewitness says he heard a bang and the sound of crashing glass before running down stairs to find a car lodged in the front doors of Coles. Watch the video.
An elderly woman has driven through the front door of Coles Umina Beach taking out a street sign and bollards on the way.
Eyewitness Gary Brown said the accident happened just after 2pm with the driver lucky to miss pedestrians in West Street.
“Our office is across the street and we hear this huge bang and crash of glass breaking that reverberated through the whole building,” Mr Brown said.
“She’s just missed going through the doors of Liquorland — it’s amazing nobody got hit — there were a lot of people around,” he said.
“The staff of Coles were on it straight away helping the driver and making sure people didn’t get cut by glass.”
Mr Brown said police and ambulance arrived quickly but the elderly woman driver did not appear to have been injured.
He said she was removed from the car and was seated nearby where ambulance officers were talking to her.
“She looked shocked but I think she was OK,” he said
Police cordoned off the road to Coles as a tow truck worked to extricate the car from the glass window.
Umina Fire Brigade was on hand.
