A Central Coast sex shop going up against unregulated pop-up stores and “online behemoths” is looking to open its second store in a prominent spot on the Pacific Highway.
But before anyone hits the roof, access to the restricted premises, which backs onto Dignity Crescent, will be via the front door only according to a development application (DA) lodged with Central Coast Council.
Love and Lust lingerie and adult shop on Mann St, Gosford, is looking to open a second store a few kilometres away at 262 Manns Rd (Pacific Highway), West Gosford.
The prominent location has long been home to East Coast Roofing and Building Supplies but is being taken over by the adult store, which has proposed a $10,000 fit out and new signage.
That rear component of the building, which fronts Dignity Crescent, is under separate tenancy and does not form part of the proposal.
“Modest in scale and excluding the complexities associated with the operation of ‘sex services premises’ the premises satisfy the locational requirements of the [planning laws] being not less than 100m removed from a church, hospital, school, community facility, residential property, or any place regularly frequented by children for recreational or cultural activities,” the DA states.
Under the plans the shop will be managed typically by two staff and used for the “discrete display and retail sale of adult products including sex toys, lingerie and costumes, publications”.
“Frosted” film will be applied to the windows to stop passers-by from being able to peep in and the proposed opening hours will be from 10am to 6pm.
“The proponent is an experienced operator of `restricted premises’ with an established client base of individuals and couples with special needs and others as diverse as marriage councillors and sex therapists to casual hosts of `bucks’ and `hens’ celebrations.
“The proposed development is consistent with the likely and desired future built
environment and is consistent with the statutory [planning] controls.
“Designed to facilitate the adaptive reuse and economic utility of an existing building, the proposal has been prepared in response to competition from evidentially unregulated local retail `start-ups’ of like premises at Erina and Woy Woy as well as online behemoths who offer no local job opportunity or industry expertise.”
