Wamberal: Dr Wayne Miller refuses to disclose what he’s protesting at corner of Tumbi Rd and Nartanda Ave

And now we’ll never know — council has moved to shut down a campsite protest at Wamberal before anyone could find out what it stood for.

More ‘bizarre’ climate protests in Sydney

It had all the hallmarks of a really good, grassroots community barney.

A protest camp complete with tents, gazebo and even portable toilets had popped up on a reserve next to a busy Central Coast road.

The signs questioning “Why?” and labelling the grievance “a quiet stink” had enough intrigue to leave thousands of motorists passing Tumbi Rd every day scratching their heads.

The elderly, well dressed, man behind the protest had even hinted at answers promising a lecture series was “coming soon”.

But not soon enough as it turned out, with Central Coast Council putting the skids on old mate’s protest before he’d even really begun.

Had he had an important message, or even a silly one, it matters nought after the closure rendered his protest arguably the most pointless on the coast, ever.

“Council is aware that a member of the public is currently camped in the road reserve on the corner of Nartanda Av and Tumbi Rd, Wamberal,” a council spokesperson said.

“Council staff have spoken with the individual and commenced enforcement action to have the road reserve cleared of all items unlawfully stored in the location.”

The man, who went by the name Dr Wayne Miller, was nowhere to be seen when the Express Advocate dropped by on Wednesday.

His camp was largely packed up with much of his belongings enclosed in temporary construction site fencing.

The single word question “WHY?” is sprawled in pink spray painting across what appears to be the top half of an old portable toilet.

Another sign propped up against a power pole reads “Doc’s peacefull (sic) protest” while another states “A quiet stink”.

The cryptic clues have greeted thousands of motorists who travel along Tumbi Rd, at the intersection of Nartanda Ave, for just over a week.

More recently another couple of signs have appeared on a box trailer stating “coming soon lecture series Dr Miller” hint at a possible answer to the bizarre one-man protest that has sprung up at Wamberal.

The man behind the small collection of dome tents, portable toilets, a gazebo — and now with the weather turning even colder — a small steel fire pit, refuses to reveal what it’s all about.

The well dressed man, aged about in his 70s, goes by the name Dr Wayne Miller.

But that’s about as far as he cares to reveal.

The empty half portaloo shell with the “Why?” sprawled across it and the “quiet stink” appear to be some kind of cryptic reference to why the elderly man would set up camp by the side of the road.

But at least with two other functioning portable toilets on site — one signposted for `ladies’ and the other by inference, for gentlemen — it appears Mr Miller has successfully overcome the delicate, age-old dilemma for protesters for how to answer the call of nature.

The pop-up protest meanwhile continues to capture the attention of passers-by with some turning to social media for answers.

Some people commented on a Facebook community group page how they assumed it had something to do with the federal election, while another mistakenly thought one of the signs had something to do with “The Block” and assumed filming for Channel 9’s hit reality television series was coming to Wamberal.

“Worst corner on Tumbi Rd to set up camp. Bloody silly idea,” one person commented.
