Dressed in prison greens Shaylee Cheal, 25, sat sobbing in an audiovisual suite as she appeared at Gosford Local Court on Monday after spending her first weekend behind bars.

Her boyfriend Hayden Brindle, 29, also appeared via video link with their solicitor James Nicopoulos applying for bail on their behalf.

The pair were pulled over and arrested about 5pm on Thursday and charged with 37 offences.

They included allegedly masterminding a serious home invasion at Hamlyn Terrace, in which a group of men assaulted a man, 24, and tried to kidnap another occupant on September 27 last year.

They faced Newcastle Local Court on Friday but were adjourned to Gosford on Monday for a bail hearing.

Mr Nicopoulos told the court the alleged break and enter at Hamlyn Terrace, and the drug supply offences occurred before they were charged for supplying steroids in October.

He said police would have known about these allegations when they were granted bail for the other alleged offences in October and they had complied with strict conditions ever since.

He told the court Ms Cheal had been the victim of an earlier home invasion and her “arm was broken with a baseball bat’.

Police allege following that attack, Ms Cheal and Mr Brindle knowingly organised a reprisal attack at Hamlyn Terrace.

However, Mr Nicopoulos said the Crown’s case was “very weak” and there was no direct evidence they set it up or were even present.

Mr Brindle, 29, is charged with 34 offences including supply commercial quantity of drugs; nine counts of suppling drugs on an ongoing basis; 20 counts of supplying a prohibited drug, robbery armed with offensive weapon causing grievous bodily harm, kidnapping a person in company with intent to obtain advantage; knowingly deal in proceeds of crime, and knowingly direct activities of criminal group.

Ms Cheal, 25, was charged with armed robbery causing grievous bodily harm, attempted kidnapping and attempting to acquire a firearm.

Mr Nicopoulos said police alleged she wanted to acquire a firearm because she used the words that she needed a “bam bam”.

However, he said that was too obscure and could relate to anything from a guard dog named “Bam Bam” to a character in the Flintstones cartoon.

He told the court the couple worked in Mr Brindle’s carpet laying business and could abide by already strict conditions.

Magistrate Alan Railton said while it was not a “show cause” offence because the allegations predated charges for which they were currently on bail, he refused Mr Brindle bail because he had four matters of violence on his record.

Mr Railton granted Ms Cheal bail but added a “non-association” condition that she not contact her boyfriend or any police witnesses.
