The Umina Beach mum charged over the attempted murder of her daughter has faced court asking to be able to sell children baked goods.

The 28-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, made her first appearance in person at Gosford Local Court on Friday. She is facing one charge of attempted murder and using poison to endanger life.

Charge sheets tendered to the court allege that on August 12 2020 the woman did attempt to murder her daughter and gave her “a poison namely insulin”.

Her defence lawyer made a bail variation request before Magistrate Jennifer Price to change the condition that she not be allowed in the company of anyone under 16.

She requested that the woman be allowed to be around minors at the Central Coast bakery where she works.

The court heard she occasionally worked on her own at the bakery in her role as casual baking assistant.

Magistrate Price said it was a difficult request considering the case against the woman and some unclear aspects including the occasional times she would be unsupervised.

“In terms of protection of the community, the court needs to be mindful of that,” she said.

“I do have concerns about the nature of the allegations that have been made and the need for bail conditions to be imposed.”

The woman’s defence made it clear the allegations were solely against the woman’s child.

However Magistrate Price denied the request saying “I am not of the view that it protects the community in the broader sense The court’s greater concern is the protection of the community. It’s not a condition that could be allowed to be varied.”

Her matter was adjourned until January 21, 2022.

In September last year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad established Strike Force Flide after being notified a two-year-old girl had been hospitalised.

Police were told the child was admitted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead on two separate occasions in August and September last year, after suspected poisoning.

The girl was treated and has since recovered.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested the 28-year-old woman, confirmed to be the girl’s mother, at a home at Umina Beach on July 28 2021. She was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged.
