A $23.7 million sporting complex in Tuggerah is on track for completion by September 2018.
Turf has been laid on five of the nine playing fields at the Tuggerah Regional Sporting Complex.
Stage one of the Lake Road development will include a premier ground plus eight playing fields, cricket pitches, public amenities including change rooms, canteen facilitates, store rooms and parking.
Council manager for open space and recreation Brett Sherar said the council was leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of an ideal playing field.
“Spring is the perfect time of year to lay good turf and this is the start of what will be an 12 month process to create the perfect playing field,” he said.
“We want to attract significant sporting competitions from around Australia and we can do that by establishing our reputation as having first class surfaces.”
Mayor Jane Smith said the complex was the biggest infrastructure project to be delivered on the Central Coast in the 2017-18 financial year.
“The economic benefits that will flow to the Central Coast from hosting major sporting tournaments are huge — in tourism dollars and in creating local employment opportunities,” she said.
Stage two will see the development of a multipurpose indoor complex and 3000 seat grandstand, however this stage is yet to receive funding.
The complex, located on the Pioneer Dairy site, will cater for other recreational activities and events such as markets, expos and festivals.
It has been jointly funded by the Australian Government, investing $10 million through the National Stronger Regions Fund, and council contributing $13.71 million.
