Terrigal boardwalk: Council to vote on funding and tenders

The idea of building a boardwalk around Terrigal’s rocky headland to The Haven has divided the suburb. A vote by Central Coast Council on Monday will decide if the project proceeds.

The future of Terrigal’s controversial boardwalk plan will be decided on Monday night.

The plan for the $6 million walkway linking Terrigal beachfront with The Haven via a rocky headland has divided the community.

On one side are those who want to preserve the natural headland as it is and on the other, those who say the boardwalk could boost tourism and business and provide access to The Haven for people with mobility issues.

Councillors will vote on whether to proceed with the project and invite tenders for its construction.

The notion of a boardwalk has been around since the start of the 1990s but it appeared the project might actually get up when in June 2018 the State Government agreed to kick in $2,938,606.00 to build it.

This was contingent on Central Coast Council matching the grant.

However, after a flood of community concerns about the plan and councillors bombarded with emails against it, the decision stalled at the May council meeting.

Conservative councillor Troy Marquat accused others of delaying the decision until after the May Federal election while the head of a major Australian business organisation said failure to pass the proposal would send a message that doing business on the Central Coast was too hard.

Councillors voted instead to have a site inspection with engineers which has now taken place with seven of the 15 councillors attending.

A report to be table at Monday night’s meeting said the planned alignment of the walkway would minimise risk to both structure and users.

It outlined works required to stabilise the rock face including removing some loose vegetation and designing supports for the structure.

Work to upgrade Terrigal Rockpool has already begun as part of the overall plan for the area.
