The Terrigal BMX Track was one of the first projects on the coast to benefit from a COVID inspired state government cash splash to keep the economy ticking over.
The $300,000 funding, through round three of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, has seen dirt sections of the track replaced with a new all-weather polymer surface.
The asphalt berms were also re-done, making them bigger and steeper along with modifications to some jumps and drainage.
The new surface will prevent erosion in the wet and will ensure the track remains compliant with BMX Australia’s specifications.
And while the new surface makes the track faster, it is also less forgiving than dirt in the event a rider loses control and slides out.
However soft new turf has also been laid on the infield sections of the track should a rider lose control altogether.
After being closed for the past two months the track will officially open tomorrow.
Terrigal State Liberal MP Adam Crouch said the upgrade would provide Terrigal BMX Club and the wider community an improved facility for recreation, training and competitions.
He said not only did the construction work boost the local economy at such a critical time during COVID it would also provide significant improvements to the track, which was regularly used by BMX enthusiasts and local residents.
“Importantly, this will enable Terrigal BMX Club to host higher level state and national BMX events for the first time,” he said.
At the time of the funding announcement Terrigal BMX Club president Brendan Miotello said it was an exciting development for the club.
“These upgrades to the Terrigal BMX facility will provide a safer, more functional venue that will be accessed by our current members, potential future members and general community,” he said.
“It will provide a more competitive facility for our club.”
The club has already had a few laps around the new track, with it’s first official race day tomorrow at 4pm with weeknight training to resume Monday.
