Berkeley Vale have sent a clear message of intent to their Central Coast Division Rugby League rivals by signing Jamy Forbes as first grade coach for 2020.
Forbes played in and coached premiership winning sides for The Entrance in the prestigious Jim Beam and Ron Massey Cups. He then coached Terrigal to grand final victory in the local competition in his only season with the Sharks in 2017.
Berkeley Vale club president Ken Smith said Forbes’ signing had already piqued interest in the club.
“He’s been successful everywhere he goes and he wants to do the same at our footy club,” Smith said.
Forbes had thought his coaching days were over but good mate and Berkeley Vale playmaker and coach Alex Moore had other ideas.
“Moorey just kept pestering me,” Forbes said with a laugh.
“At the back end of 2019 I went over and helped a couple of times, which I enjoyed.
“It gained a bit of momentum about a month ago and in recent weeks I’ve been getting really excited.”
After five years at the helm, Moore is looking forward to winding up his playing career without the extra workload of coaching.
“Being captain-coach just does your head in,” Moore said frankly.
“I want to play but I wanted someone to come in and coach who I would respect.
“It’s good to be back working with Forbesy again.”
Forbes has already started recruiting, with the Panthers acquiring Harley Ridge, Scott Schreiber, Jordan Deaves and Kye Hopwood.
