Central Coast skier Abbey Willcox’s third at Deer Valley World Cup
She hails from a part of NSW better known for its surfers and footballers but that hasn’t stopped this high flying Aussie turning heads on the world stage.

She hails from a place better know for its surfers than skiers but Abbey Willcox is a real high flyer in her sport.
The 23-year-old Central Coast athlete has stunned with a breakthrough podium finish in a World Cup meet in the US.
Abbey Willcox’s third at Deer Valley in the US marks the first time the young skier has climbed onto a World Cup dais.

It was an emotional result for the aerial skier from the NSW Central Coast who was making her first ever appearance in a World Cup final.

“A lot of nerve’s, a lot of adrenaline, a lot of excitement,” said Somersby’s Willcox who qualified for the finals in fourth place, then finished fifth in the first round to advance to the top super six final.
Former gymnast Willcox landed a lay-full double back somersault in the super final for a score of 81.78 points.
Belarus world champion Aliaksandra Ramanouskaya own with 106.74 while American Megan Nick picked up silver with 83.89 points.
“It feels absolutely unreal and to be doing it in Deer Valley with this crowd is amazing,” an excited Willcox said after the event.
“It was my first time in the finals and on the podium so I had all sorts of emotions going on.
“We has a couple of tricky days training, it was snowing a lot and I knew I could jump during the snow, during the wind because we’ve had a lot of practice for that in the past, so I just took it jump by jump.”
“I’m really excited for the next four world cups and the season and I can’t wait.”
The stunning performance has lifted Willcox up into sixth place on the FIS World Cup standings.
Teammate and former world champion Laura Peel qualified for finals in third place fell on her triple back somersault in the first round of finals to finish ninth.
After three World Cups and ahead of the next event in Moscow Peel is ranked third in the world.
