A NSW Ambulance spokesman said three ambulance crews responded, along with a Westpac Rescue Helicopter and lifeguards, following reports a person had come off a boogie board, fallen onto the rocks and sustained a head injury.

The man was pulled to shore however attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he died at the scene.

Spoon Bay is an unpatrolled beach which is notorious for strong rips. However it is also a popular beach for young families.

It is understood the man paddled out between a gap in the rocks before being swept into a rock shelf at the northern end of the beach.

He was still attached to his body board with a leash when he was brought to shore unconscious.

Brisbane Water Chief Inspector Paul Nicholls said lifeguards from Wamberal Beach responded and began CPR until paramedics arrived.

“There were a number of bystanders at the time, they all assisted to get the male from the water and lifeguards were notified and commenced CPR,” Chief Insp Nicholls said.

“Their efforts can be commended in the circumstances, they responded as soon as they were notified and despite their best efforts the male could not be revived.”

Chief Insp Nicholls said the man was at the beach with one other person.

“We are still investigating the circumstances of when he arrived, who he arrived with and what led up to before he went into the water,” he said.

“That will form part of our investigation.”

It is understood the man’s mother has been notified although he is yet to be formally identified by police.
