Nine Central Coast suburbs will be among the first in Australia to get access to long awaited 5G technology as Optus rolls out its next generation network.

Optus has announced that Tascott, Niagara Park, Springfield, Yattalunga, Woy Woy Bay, Phegans Bay Koolewong, Daleys Point and St Huberts Island will join 13 other NSW locations with 5G sites — with a total of 60 sites nationwide.

This is expected to grow to 1200 Australian sites by March 2020.

For the uninitiated, 5G is the next major evolution of mobile network technology, promising faster network speeds of up to 200Mbps (that’s 20 times faster than NBN), shorter lag time, and a greater number of simultaneous connections to the network.

Optus announced its plans in Canberra this week and said it has partnered with Nokia to build the 5G network.

Optus will also rollout Australia’s first 5G home broadband solution with customers in the nine local suburbs able to sign up in an Expression of Interest campaign.

The Optus 5G Home Broadband bundle will be offered for $70 a month with a minimum speed guarantee of 50Mbps.

The 1200 sites planned to be completed by March next year will include residential locations and other frequented spots like airports, train stations, sporting stadiums and CBDs.

The Optus 5G Home Broadband plan will be enabled using a 5G modem described by Optus CEO Allen Lew as an “off-the-shelf product” that will be manufactured by Nokia as seen in the image released by Optus today.
