A Central Coast aerial photography company has captured the unfolding drama as a block of units in Gertrude Street North Gosford caught fire yesterday.

Steve Howath of Howath Aviation said he just happened to be flying over when he noticed the fire and took the image which shows smoke billowing from a top floor unit of the building and five fire engines in the streets below.

The fire broke out in the unit complex in the middle of the day and it was initially feared someone was trapped inside, but this was later ruled out.

Thirty people had to be evacuated by Fire and Rescue NSW during the incident with crews entering each unit in the complex to ensure everyone was out.

The fire eventually spread to the roof area of the complex as well and fire fighters took a number of hours to extinguish the blaze.

There were no reports of injuries.
