Nine Frank Baxter detainees charged over earlier incident
Nine Frank Baxter detainees charged over a roof top fire a month before last month’s violent riot.
Nine juvenile detainees have been charged over an earlier “disturbance” at the Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre, which occurred about a month before last month’s bloody riot in which several inmates were viciously assaulted.
About 7.30pm on Sunday, June 9, Brisbane Water Police were called to the centre after reports of a “disturbance”.
Police will allege several juvenile detainees were on the roof and lighting fires, with Fire and Rescue NSW crews called to extinguish the blaze.
Extensive damage in excess of $80,0000 was sustained to the roof cavity, light fittings, walls and furniture of the centre.
No one was physically injured during the incident.
Following extensive inquiries police charged nine juveniles, aged between 15 and 18, with a range of offences including affray, assaulting a law officer, malicious damage and destroying property.
They will all face a children’s court on Friday, September 27.
It comes after 20 juvenile and adult detainees faced Children’s and Local Courts for their alleged role in the July 21 riot, in which known sex offenders were targeted after a guard was overpowered and his keys stolen.
Another brawl broke out between two warring Western Sydney Gangs before police were able to get the majority of the 83 detainees to surrender peacefully.
