The Central Coast schools that have improved their NAPLAN results the most in the last five years have been revealed.

An analysis of five years’ worth of NAPLAN results has revealed the schools that have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores.

The coast school that improved their Year 5 results the most between 2014 and 2018 was The Coast Christian School, in Bensville, where the average results across all subjects improved by 7.1 per cent.

Average Year 9 results at Central Coast Sports College – formerly the International Football and Tennis School – in Kariong increased by 6.7 per cent, the biggest improvement on the coast.

The analysis compared each school’s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2014 and compared to the same results in 2018.

Central Coast’s second biggest improvement in Year 5 results over those five years was Kulnura Public School where scores increased 6.5 per cent.

The third biggest Year 5 improver was Wyoming Public School where results increased 6.2 per cent over the five-year period.

The Central Coast school with the second biggest Year 9 improvement between 2014 and 2018 was St Philip’s Christian College – Gosford, in Narara, where results improved 5.2 per cent.

While St Philip’s made the list for its improvements in Year 9, the school is making remarkable improvements in its Year 3 results after being identified for the Literacy & Numeracy Action Plan (LNAP) to strengthen its numeracy and literacy results.

St Philip’s Head of the Junior School Helen Finlay said the school had finished its third year of the plan and the results were remarkable.

“We are up past similar independent schools in the area and have soared above state average for reading, grammar, punctuation, spelling and numeracy,” she said. “Our writing has gone from below state average to the state average.”

Ms Finlay said while the program was designed for K-2 students, the school was seeing a “flow on effect” in other years with the school using the “back to basics” methods in older grades.

“We are using the same research in our older years and it’s showing huge improvements. It’s a back to basics program supported by instructional leadership.”

Average results at Gorokan High School, in Lake Haven, increased 3.4 per cent, the third highest increase on the coast.
