THE heat has been turned up on brothels and massage centres around Gosford and West Gosford after 10 premises failed basic fire safety requirements.
Central Coast Council has received reports from Fire and Rescue NSW regarding inadequate fire safety provisions at four brothels and six massage centres in and around Gosford CBD.
This follows a local police and FRNSW blitz conducted in June/July targeting massage centres and brothels across Gosford.
Safety concerns include insufficient fire hydrants, obstructed emergency exit doors and paths to exits, lack of emergency lights, lack of signage to the location of fire hydrants and a lack of maintenance to smoke alarms.
At Monday night’s council meeting, the multitude of FRNSW reports were brought to councillors’ attention.
All of the FRNSW reports stated “there are inadequate provisions for fire safety within the building”.
Councillor Greg Best queried why such a large bulk of “bordellos” and massage centres had come before the council at this time.
“Why have these issues come out as a block?” Cr Smith asked.
“Has there been some special sweep?
Group Leader for Environment and Planning Scott Cox said the report was the result of a targeted effort by the police and FRNSW.
The council has called for further reports on four of the premises, while the others will be called on to fix inadequate fire safety environments and equipment.
Councillor Doug Vincent questioned whether fire and safety reports needed to come before the council and not be handled by staff.
