Take your last looks at the cliffs between Terrigal Esplanade and The Haven – the new 277 metre boardwalk and ocean pool is just around the corner.
Construction of the $5.8 million boardwalk and viewing platform is weeks away with the tender for works being awarded to Land & Marine Group.
Central Coast Parliamentary Secretary Adam Crouch said with the contract awarded, work is expected to begin in late April.
“A boardwalk at Terrigal has been talked about for decades and I am thrilled that the tender has been awarded for work to finally begin,” Mr Crouch said.
He said a Central Coast Council survey on the matter resulted in 81 per cent of the community in support of the boardwalk. A petition was also gathered in support of the project with 2000 signatures.
However there has been objections to the boardwalk, with many people keen to retain the natural landscape at Terrigal and expressed concerns regarding safety in rough conditions. However, everyone is keen to see the dilapidated ocean pool restored.
“Council expects construction to begin after the April school holidays and will occur in conjunction with the replacement of the ocean pool,” Mr Crouch said.
“The boardwalk will be 277 metres long and include integrated seating, lighting and a viewing platform.
“This project will transform the way people are able to access Terrigal – particularly for parents with prams, people with disability and the elderly.”
Central Coast Council Mayor Lisa Matthews said the project would “significantly improve pedestrian access between Terrigal Beach promenade and The Haven”.
“In addition, this project will help grow tourism and boost the local economy,” she said.
“We have listened to the community and taken on-board feedback received during community consultation activities – which demonstrated a majority of support from residents.”
The project is jointly funded with both the council and State Government kicking in $2.9 million.
