The State’s would-be Premier Michael Daley has stepped in to trump this week’s Liberal funding announcement on improved water quality.
During the official launch of Labor’s Central Coast campaign today, Mr Daley said Labor would inject $10 million into “the Central Coast Cleaner Waterways fund” including $5 million for dredging and $5m for waterway clean ups — particularly Tuggerah Lake.
This follows announcements by the Liberal Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton on Tuesday that it would provide $500,000 for cleaning up Terrigal Beach and surrounding lagoons and $200,000 to set up an expert panel to examine water quality issues in Tuggerah Lake.
Speaking about his own announcment Mr Daley said the Goernment had not done enough to solve local problems.
“A Labor Government will get the Entrance channel dredged, and we’ll guarantee that the Ettalong Channel will be kept open for boating and public transport,” Mr Daley said.
“Labor will also tackle the water quality crisis across your pristine beaches like Terrigal because unlike Ms Berejiklian and the Liberals we know that another ‘working group’ won’t do the trick, so Labor will give council the support and funds they need to get the job done,” he said.
It’s all music to the ears of community groups who have been lobbying for action on channel dredging at The Entrance and Ettalong and for poor water quality at popular tourist spots like Terrigal.
