The 20-year-old represented herself, saying “I know what I did … it’s disgusting”.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t have alcohol in my system,” she said. “I was defending a friend I was with. It’s out of character.”

Magistrate Alex Mijovich described Genner’s actions as “out of control” highlighting that she continued the fight after security intervened. He said the charge of affray carried a lengthy jail sentence and was brought about after the Cronulla riots.

“This is somebody that is totally out of control,” he said. “If that’s how you respond after having a few drinks, you need to consider how many drinks you have. You will have a criminal conviction over this.”

The facts stated there was another group of people at a nearby table, who the co-accused had “issues with”.

At 10.30pm, the man celebrating his birthday became aggressive claiming the two women with issues had ruined his birthday. Genner tried to calm him down, however he was kicked out of the club.

Genner and her friend walked away, however a woman at the other table was yelling and pointing. A polystyrene cocktail cup was thrown, grazing a woman’s eyebrow which escalated to a glass being thrown and just missing Genner’s friend. Soon after the catfight was in full swing.

“Kaylla Genner began throwing punches at (a female) and grabbed her hair and pulled it. As she did this the accused fell to the ground,” the facts read.

The woman being punched and pulled by the hair sat on a bench seat when Genner and her friend pulled her off the chair “punching her head on numerous occasions”. Genner also held her down at one point.

The women were eventually separated by security however the verbal abuse continued from the other group which started another fight. Genner ran in again and started grabbing and pulling a woman’s hair, before she was pulled away.

When security got the situation under control, Genner and her friends were kicked out of the club.

As a result of the fight a woman was taken to hospital with a cut to her eyebrow and a broken nose from an “unknown person”.

On September 15 Genner was interviewed at Gosford Police Station and watched CCTC footage of herself which she described as “disgusting”. However she said she was defending her friend.

When asked in court if she was prepared to go to jail, Genner said “I’m not prepared to go to jail but I am not going to stand here and say I didn’t do what I did. It was a one-off thing. A bunch of girls wanted to fight me and my friend, it was a hard situation.”

Magistrate Mijovich sentenced Genner to a 12 month community corrections order and fined her $1000. Her friend is due to face court on November 12.
