CENTRAL Coast Council will call for a halt to work on the Kangy Angy rail maintenance facility if they are not briefed on the development within two weeks.
Mayor Jane Smith lodged a mayoral minute last night, calling for an urgent meeting with Transport for NSW, and other relevant State Government agencies.
“If a meeting cannot be held within a fortnight then we will be calling on all work relating to the facility to cease until a meeting can take place,” she said.
Council is keen to address the environmental sensitivity and local residents’ concerns for the $300 million development which will maintain the New Intercity Fleet.
Cr Smith said council would put forward concerns to the State Government relating to the location of the approved facility.
“Landowners feel they have been railroaded in this whole process and their voices remain unheard,” she said.
“We are asking Transport for NSW to come to the table with Council to hear first-hand community concerns and to discuss the future of the proposed railyards, particularly in other locations.”
Council is also looking to Transport for NSW to revisit other site options outlined in previous consultant reports.
The site will run 24/7 and include about six kilometres of electrified railway up to seven tracks wide, offices, amenities, staff parking and ancillary buildings. Local residents have been campaigning against the facility which will be built near rural homes and on flood-prone land.
