Two of the three young men charged over an alleged “violent and brazen” robbery of a woman at The Entrance have been granted bail.
Jordan Gold, 19, of Wyongah, Michael Page, 22, of Wyoming and Joel Russell, 20 of Watanobbi all appeared via audio visual link from custody before Wyong Local Court on Tuesday.
Gold and Page applied for bail for a second time after initially being refused bail following their arrest on May 22, while Russell did not make an application.
Police allege that the three men allegedly pulled up next to a young woman on the side of the road at The Entrance about 6.30am on May 22 and attempted to take her handbag.
Gold allegedly struck the woman in the face, causing her nose to bleed, while one of the other two men in the car called out “quick, steal her bag”.
The men were tracked down in the afternoon by police who spotted their vehicle near Mingara Recreation Club, however they allegedly fled from officers before being pulled over.
Gold’s defence lawyer told the court his father and brother had indicated they would do everything they could to ensure Gold did not breach bail. The court also heard he had guaranteed employment with a roofing company.
The lawyer said this was Gold’s first alleged offence with police alleging he got out of the car to commit the robbery.
“There’s no proof … it’s similar clothing they (police) are relying on,” she said.
Page’s defence lawyer also highlighted family support indicating that he was able to live with family in Killarney Vale and work for a demolition company.
The prosecutor outlined concerns including the safety of the community and unacceptable risk of flight. He said that while Page was the alleged driver of the vehicle who did not get out of the car, the prosecution case against him was strong.
“He was found with property belonging to the victim the same day he was caught by police,” the prosecutor told the court.
Magistrate Peter Miszalski said that the young men would be in custody for a long time while waiting for a potential trial.
He granted Gold and Page bail with conditions regarding reporting to police stations, curfews as well as not associating with the alleged victim and co-offenders.
When the trio first appeared before the court, Magistrate Justin Peach described the alleged robbery as “particularly brazen and violent”.
Charge sheets tendered in court allege the three young men stole a black vinyl handbag from the victim which contained a wallet, personal cards, iPhone X and a set of Ford car keys.
Page was also charged with driving while never having held a licence and failing to stop when directed by police without a reasonable excuse, while Russell was also charged with being in custody of a knife in public and possessing a restricted substance.
The matter was adjourned to August 2.
