Tributes are flowing for a “kind-hearted and dedicated” member of the Gosford Rural Fire Service Catering Unit.
Joanne Gaffey, 73, suffered a stroke while on duty at the kitchen on February 4 and died in hospital on February 6 with family by her side.
Mrs Gaffey had been a member of the catering unit for the past seven years and was the first aid safety officer, crew member mentor and driver.
On top of her voluntary duties with the RFS, Mrs Gaffey worked full time for David Jones.
Gosford Catering Unit captain Gail Simpson described Mrs Gaffey as a “very dedicated worker”.
“She would take time off work when there were major fires, she loved coming up and volunteering her time for the guys and girls at the fire grounds,” she said.
“They all loved seeing Joanne drive down with the food and drinks.
“She had a very strong work ethic and was a reliable and capable mentor to our new members. Her passing is such a sad loss.”
Captain Simpson said the Wyoming mother and grandmother had a lovely personality.
“She was kind-hearted and was just a lovely person,” she said.
“She never had a negative comment and was so well respected. She was actually in the process of becoming a duty manager of the kitchen.
“She will be greatly missed.”
RFS brigades from across the state have passed on their condolences to the Gosford unit and Mrs Gaffey’s family.
“Condolences to her family and friends and Gosford catering. No matter what she always left us smiling,” the BSW RFS - Macmasters Beach Brigade posted.
Mrs Gaffey’s funeral will be held on Saturday at Palmdale Lawn Cemetery & Memorial Park from 9.30am.
