Jaradd Curran: Cocaine dealer poured $69k from concrete business into drugs

A drug dealer who poured $69,000 from his concreting business into cocaine and methylamphetamine will miss the birth of his twins after being sentenced, a court has heard.

Jaradd Anthony Curran, 33, of Budgewoi, will miss the birth of his twins after being sentenced for supplying drugs at Gosford District Court.

A concreter “caused a lot of drama” with his sister who was doing the books for his business when he poured nearly $70,000 into drugs, a court has heard.

Jaradd Anthony Curran was sentenced in Gosford District Court on Friday after pleading guilty to supplying methylamphetamine and a commercial quantity of cocaine.

The 33-year-old from Budgewoi also pleaded guilty to supplying a smaller amount of cocaine, possessing a restricted substance and dealing with the proceeds of crime, which were taken into account when he was sentenced.

The court heard Curran was using about 1g of cocaine a week and 1g of ‘ice’ a month at the time of his arrest in October 2019 but had been abstinent since, going to narcotics anonymous and seeing a psychologist.

Giving evidence at his sentencing hearing Curran told the court he listened to stories about the effects of drugs from people at narcotics anonymous and had “caused a lot of drama” with his sister, who did his books, when he pulled $69,000 out of his concreting business to buy drugs.

“I’m genuinely sorry for the people I’ve hurt,” he said.

The court heard he spent $60,000 of his company’s money on cocaine and $9000 on methylamphetamine — with a street value of $96,750 and $19,700 respectively — which he intended to supply to “friends” to recoup his investment and for his own use.

However he told the court he was not financially motivated to make a profit despite how much money he had pulled out of his business.

The court heard his partner of two years Demi Black, who was seated in the rear of the court, was expecting twins in April and their birth was a “significant motivating factor in his rehabilitation”.

An agreed set of police facts states Curran was under surveillance from April, 2019, when officers tapped his phone and recorded him supplying 3.57g of cocaine hidden in an LCMs box to a customer at Tighes Hill TAFE.

Police conducting covert surveillance watched him arrive in a white tipper truck with his company’s Empire Concreting signage on the side.

At 6.10am on October 22, 2019, police obtained a warrant to search his house and provided his partner Ms Black, who was home at the time, with a copy of the occupier’s notice.

Ms Black was not charged with anything and there is no suggestion she was involved in any way.

Officers found 10 boxes of Clenbuterol 40, with each box containing 100 tablets, in the kitchen. They also found $5800 in cash in the top right hand drawer in the kitchen.

On the same day police searched another Budgewoi home and found 322.5g of cocaine and 78.8g of methylamphetamine belonging to Curran.

He told the court he got the Clenbuterol from a “gym head’ mate and was going to give it to another friend who was trying to lose weight after giving birth.

Judge Tanya Bright said she was satisfied Curran was remorseful and had good prospects of rehabilitation but his criminal history, which included six months in jail for a previous offence, “disentitled him to leniency”.

She sentenced Curran to three years and eight months jail with a non-parole period of one year and 10 months.
