Hamlyn Terrace: Alysha Bree Beamish convicted of intimidation after three-hour rant

A woman who came out of Covid lockdown to find her boyfriend had moved on to another woman has been convicted of intimidation after threatening to ram the new couples’ cars.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A magistrate has told a court she may have been persuaded to avoid imposing a conviction against a woman charged with intimidating her ex-boyfriend and his new love interest had the confrontation been “spontaneous”.

However given the woman’s wild abuse — in which she threatened to “destroy” and “ram” their cars — went for three hours the magistrate said she had no other alternative than to deter others from “taking revenge”.

Alysha Bree Beamish faced Wyong Local Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to two counts of intimidation on the day of her hearing.

An agreed set of facts states the 24-year-old, of Gorokan, had been in an intimate relationship with a man for about 12 months before it ended and he started dating another woman.

About 8.30pm on October 15 the man and his new girlfriend arrived at his home after a night out at the Dam Hotel when Beamish arrived at the front door.

“The defendant began abusing and threatening both (the man and woman) and inciting the pair to come outside and `sort the issue’,” the facts state.

“Despite the (pair’s) attempts to mediate the situation and instruct the defendant to leave, the defendant continued her harassing and frightening behaviour for approximately three hours.”

The facts state Beamish repeatedly told the pair “I will destroy your car”, “you know who my father is” and “just wait until my father gets here”.

Beamish also told them several times “I know your licence plates”, “I have no problem ramming your car” and “dad has hit bitches for less”.

Beamish’s lawyer Brad Kernick told the court she believed the “on-off relationship” was still ongoing and she had been in lockdown because of Covid.

He said Beamish was forced to endure the loss of a pregnancy “alone” in lockdown and emerged to find what she thought was still her boyfriend with “this other woman”.

Mr Kernick said Beamish had no criminal history and a conviction could impact her future employment prospects.

However Magistrate Kirralee Perry said “a distinction has to be drawn” between someone going around and having a spontaneous confrontation about a new love interest “as opposed to three hours of abuse”.

Ms Perry convicted Beamish of both counts of intimidation and fined her $300 for each offence.
