The old Stockton Ferry has sunk and created a fuel spill spanning 400m in Lake Macquarie.
Fire and Rescue NSW crews headed Gwandalan just before 9am after receiving a triple-0 call that the old ferry had sunk at the front of the Gwandalan Bowling Club jetty.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said there was 1000 litres of diesel on board the ferry which has leaked into the waterway.
“There are two crews on scene working with Maritime Services,” she told the Express.
“The maritime team are deploying flotation booms to stop the leak spreading any further. “There are also hazmat teams on board to remove as much oil as possible. The operation will be ongoing for most of the day.”
At this stage, crews are unsure what caused the 19m ferry to sink. All that remains above water is the top wheel house of the vessel.
More to come.
