A young Sydney dance teacher was staying with friends at an Airbnb at Toukley when she decided to drink-drive to pick up someone she had never even met before slamming into a house, a court has heard.
Abigail Lillian Donne, 21, of Narraweena, faced Wyong Local Court on Monday where she pleaded guilty to high range drink-driving and negligent driving.
Her solicitor told the court that Donne was a hard working and well respected young dance instructor who taught at four campuses across northern Sydney.
He said she was on a weekend away with friends and may have succumbed to “peer pressure” when she decided to drive to Gosford to pick up someone “she had never met” after drinking.
An agreed set of facts states police were travelling west on Wallarah Rd, Gorokan, at 12.30am on Saturday, February 8, when they passed a red sedan travelling at speed in the opposite direction with one headlight out.
Police did a U-turn and attempted to catch up to Donne’s Mazda 3 as she turned down three side streets at speed.
“Police observed the vehicle turn right into Coorabin St, following it around the corner where they observed it leave the roadway and collide with the house at 8 Coorabin St,” the facts state.
“As police approached the driver door, a female exited the vehicle, appearing visibly upset and apologising.
“Police asked the accused what she was doing to which she stated that she was going to pick up a friend from the Gosford Hotel. She advised that she was staying in an Airbnb at Toukley and had been drinking.”
The facts state police observed the car had caused significant structural damage and cracks to the internal and external walls of the house.
Donne was arrested and later returned a reading of 0.150.
Her solicitor said the incident came as a “bolt from the blue” and “caught everyone by surprise” who knew Donne, including her mother and brother who were supporting her in court.
Magistrate Justin Peach said Donne was a “bad example of what happens when you drink and get behind the wheel and drive”.
He said he could only imagine how terrified the occupants of the house were, who he assumed were “probably asleep”, when her car came crashing into it.
Mr Peach said it was lucky no one was seriously injured or killed.
He convicted Donne and sentenced her to a community corrections order for 18 months for the drink-driving offence and disqualified her from driving for six months, with 24 months on an interlock device.
A condition of the order is that she perform 80 hours of community service work.
He took no action on the negligent driving charge after the court heard Donne had agreed to pay for the costly damage to the house.
