Gateshead: Two arrested after sawn-off firearm allegedly found in pub carpark

Operation Utah officers saw a grey Volkswagen Golf allegedly accelerating away from police on Honeysuckle Drive at Newcastle about 12pm on Thursday. They will allege the car was found in a pub’s carpark with a sawn-off firearm inside later that day.

Two men have been arrested after a sawn-off firearm was allegedly found inside a car at a Gateshead hotel carpark.

Operation Utah officers saw a grey Volkswagen Golf allegedly accelerating away from police on Honeysuckle Drive at Newcastle about 12pm on Thursday.

Utah officers and others attached to the Hunter regional enforcement squad found the car in the carpark of the Gateshead pub a short time later.

A search of the vehicle allegedly located the gun wrapped in clothing and a plastic bag containing ammunition.

Two men were arrested inside the pub.

A 24-year-old was charged with six firearm offences and driving whilst disqualified.

A 32-year-old was charged with breaching his bail.

Both were bail refused to appear in Belmont Local Court on Friday.

Police have asked for witnesses who may have seen a grey Volkswagen Golf between 11am and 12.30pm in the Newcastle area, or who may have dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
