Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre riot: 21 to be charged

Five adults and 16 youths are expected to appear in various Gosford courts today after a riot at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre on the weekend that left several people in hospital.

Twenty-one young men involved in a serious riot are expected to appear in Gosford courts today.

Police are in the process of charging the five adults and 16 youths with riot after detainees of Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre committed serious offences on staff and other detainees within the centre at the weekend.

The adults will appear today at Gosford Local Court, while the youths will appear at Woy Woy Children’s Court, also today.

About 8pm on Saturday July 21, a riot erupted within the centre that required a significant and co-ordinated response from officers within the Northern Region.

Just before 5.30pm yesterday, operatives from the Tactical Operations Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad gained access to the roof of the facility, where the remaining detainees surrendered peacefully.

Local detectives established Strike Force Mittabah to investigate the assaults and are now in the process of charging those involved with riot.

Youth Justice NSW will continue to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

Three men continue to receive medical treatment at Gosford Hospital; one man suffered stab wounds and a collapsed lung, another suffered head and facial injuries, and the third man suffered a fractured ankle.
