Former NRL star Jarryd Hayne fulfilled his promise to free his mum from the shackles of public housing at Minto by buying her a modest family home at Umina Beach on the Central Coast.
Today the 31-year-old is going one better by building a $80,000 granny flat at the rear of the property on Gwendolen Ave.
Approved by Central Coast Council in August last year the plans are for a small one-bedroom, 60sq m granny flat, at the back of the existing house to be built from wood and cladding.
The property has been a hive of activity in recent weeks with neighbours reporting a plethora of tradies undertaking the work.
Not that any of Jodie Hayne’s neighbour’s are complaining, with the development application receiving just one public submission asking “Is there a chance the owners can make room to plant a few shade trees (advanced specimens water gum etc) when this granny flat is finished?”.
“The front area would be ideal for a tree or two as there are no power lines overhead?” the submission concluded.
The former Eels fullback and NRL prodigy meanwhile remains in Western Australia where he is living at an evangelical Christian Ministry, Youth With A Mission, since seeking a bail variation in the wake of sexual assault allegations.
Hayne has pleaded not guilty to two charges of aggravated sexual assault against a woman in NSW’s Hunter Valley.
Police allege Hayne ripped off the 26-year-old woman’s clothing and bit her on the genitalia on NRL grand final night in 2018.
He will face trial in Newcastle District Court on May 4.
The $80,000 granny flat pales in comparison to the two-time Dally M Medal winner’s more recent property transactions after he finally sold his Darlinghurst investment terrace for $2.2 million late last year.
The renovated terrace at West Ave cost $1.58 million in 2013. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom 1890s property was bought when the suburb’s median house price was $1.05 million.
