A woman regretted lying to police about the alleged murder of her violent, controlling ex-boyfriend but felt she was already “in too deep”, a court has heard.

Maxie Scarlett Wilson, 30, of Erina, faced a sentencing hearing at Gosford District Court on Friday after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact to the murder of her ex-boyfriend Shahn Baker.

Emergency services were called to a public housing block at Karalta Rd, Erina, on February 3, 2022, following reports Mr Baker had been stabbed.

Despite the efforts of paramedics the 42-year-old was declared dead at the scene.

Wilson and another man, Nicholas Luke Martin, of Berkshire Park, were arrested at the scene.

Mr Martin was later charged with murder. He has pleaded not guilty and remains before the courts.

Giving evidence at her sentencing hearing, Wilson admitted to lying to police when she was first arrested and said she felt “scared” about the consequences.

“I immediately regretted that decision and knew it was too late then to retract,” she said.

“I did, I did give thought to [confessing] but once I told the lie I already thought I was in too deep and I was not sure what was going to happen.”

Wilson said despite a litany of abuse at the hands of her former boyfriend, which included locking her away for days on end, assaults and on one occasion being forced to drink bleach, she still mourned his death.

“I had just lost the man I had been in love with for six years so immediately I felt grief I felt sad. I felt confused,” she told the court.

“It’s probably wrong that I miss him because he put me through so much but I can’t help it ... Although he put me through hell I still loved him, which is why I stuck around for so long.”

Wilson said Mr Baker would lock her in the house and take away her mobile phone, cutting her off from friends and family.

“I ended up just pulling out my hair, out of frustration and angst,” she said.

“I couldn’t talk to anyone, I couldn’t get out. I didn’t eat for days or even have a shower for days. Unfortunately that’s the only release I had. Now it’s had a long-term impact.”

She said she hoped to receive treatment from a dermatologist once she was released from custody.

“Being a woman — or a man — anyone would feel self conscious about losing their hair but particularly being a woman it’s hard,” she said.

“No one really says anything about it but I feel it myself, that it’s embarrassing. Particularly after I’ve been beaten down for so long, I was looking forward to my hair growing back but it just hasn’t done that.”

Wilson will be sentenced next month.
