A 37-year-old disqualified driver told nurses she had used amphetamines after allegedly veering onto the wrong side of the road and ploughing into an oncoming car, killing a female passenger, a court has heard.

Amanda Charlene Haley, of Springfield, faced Gosford Local Court on Tuesday where her Legal Aid solicitor Ian Le Breton applied for bail.

He told the court Ms Haley sought bail so she could spend time with her eight-year-old son who was undergoing radiation therapy for a brain tumour.

He said she also hoped to secure a bed at a residential rehabilitation facility noting “commentary in the facts she told nurses she had used amphetamine”.

Ms Haley was charged with six offences following the crash shortly before 3pm on Saturday including dangerous driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm, driving while disqualified and not keeping left of a dividing line.

Charge sheets allege Ms Haley was driving a Mitsubishi Outlander on the Central Coast Highway at Forresters Beach, near Bakali St, when she crossed into the path of a Toyota Hilux.

The driver of the Toyota, a 65-year-old man identified in charge sheets as Glenn Clarke, suffered spinal and chest injuries was taken to Gosford Hospital in a stable condition.

His passenger, a 67-year-old woman named in court documents as Angela Gillfeather, was taken to John Hunter Hospital where she later died.

Ms Haley was taken to Gosford Hospital but released into police custody and later charged.

Mr Le Breton said Ms Haley could abide by conditions including reporting daily to Gosford Police Station.

However Magistrate Roger Prowse said she was on a community corrections order at the time of the incident, had been charged with driving while disqualified in the past and the court could have no confidence she would comply with any bail conditions because “you cannot comply with the law”.

He refused her bail to appear on March 27.
