A vile Northern Beaches predator who drugged his daughter and her friend in order to sexually abuse them on a camping trip to the Central Coast has been given the equivalent of a murder sentence.

The 42-year-old from Dee Why was sentenced to 20 years jail with a non-parole period of 15 years in Gosford District Court after a judge found he did not “demonstrate genuine remorse” for his heinous offending.

The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to 11 charges including aggravated indecent assault, sexual intercourse of his 13-year-old daughter’s friend, drugging girls to commit an indictable offence and producing and possessing child abuse material.

An agreed set of police facts revealed the man actively encouraged his daughter via text messages to invite her friend to go camping with him.

The trio drove up to Norah Head Holiday Park on January 12, 2017, and erected a large dome tent with three “rooms”.

Two days later his daughter woke up at 1am to find him lying next to her rubbing the outside of her underwear.

She told him to stop but he kept rubbing her stomach and told her she could trust him and that she “could be a model”.

About 9.30pm the next evening when his daughter and her friend returned from watching a screening of Fantastic Mr Fox he handed them a disposable plastic cup and told them to drink it.

They drank the “cordial” but complained it tasted “funny”.

After going to the amenities to brush their teeth the girls felt “dizzy” on their way back to the tent, the court heard.

About 1.30am his daughter’s friend woke again to find her underwear down around her ankles and the man sexually assaulting her.

She asked him “what are you doing” and he told her to “shhhh”.

The girl started screaming but he covered her mouth and tried to pin her down.

Another camper heard the girl cry out “help get away from me” and a man’s voice telling her to “shhhh”.

His daughter also woke up and the girls managed to unzip the tent and escape down the street where another person at the campground called police.

The man told campers he found his daughter’s friend half naked and was just trying to put a sleeping bag over her.

Officers arrived and a search of his bag found two sealed condoms, two satchels of `wet for longer’ lubricant, an open packet of Diazepam (valium) and a roll of duct tape.

They searched his phone and found photographs of the girls in their swimmers shot from behind and some with their head’s cropped out of the frame.

Blood samples taken from the groggy girls found they had enough valium in their system to cause them “sedation to the extent that the sexual assault could be facilitated”.

His phone’s internet history showed searches the previous day for terms including “how long does valium take to kick in”, “how much valium to take” and “how much valium for 50kg female”.

A later search of his Dee Why home found more photos of the girls in their swimmers and pornography searches for videos depicting fathers having sex with daughters.

Officers also discovered photographs of the girls in the shower naked.

The court heard they would lock the door but he would open it with a screwdriver before taking photos of them.

They also found an old photo of his daughter when she was aged eight, bound and gagged with grey duct tape lying on a bed with her legs spread apart.

In sentencing the man, Judge David Wilson said there was a strong need to denounce his offending.

“Your conduct offends all sensibilities of society,” he said.

The man has been in custody since his arrest in January 2017, so with time served he will be eligible for release in 2032.

Figures from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research shows the man’s sentence rivals that of a murder conviction, where the average sentence ranges from 16.6 years to 19.7 years over the past five years of available data.

The average sentence for a sexual assault of a child in NSW was just shy of 2.5 years in the same period.
